Darren James Interiors and Gaggenau/Sampford IXL create a sumptuous modern kitchen for two passionate foodies. They chat with QH to discuss the finer details.
What was your client’s brief?
For passionate foodies Gemma and Jacob, designing a gourmet kitchen with a culinary focus was a must. High on the priority list was ensuring it was well-equipped, utilising state-of-the-art, pro-grade appliances, durable surfaces and designated work zones to facilitate the couple working in the space together.The kitchen was to be modern and semi-commercial, without feeling clinical.The clients also wanted the kitchen to be an extension of the outdoors by creating a connection between the new space and the gorgeous views right on their doorstep.
What was the inspiration for this project?
The couple’s passion for good food, cooked well – and their creative, experimental and occasionally complex cooking style (think Heston Blumenthal). The inspiration for the colour palette and layering of textures was drawn from the property’s surrounding landscape, resulting in a warm and inviting space where the couple can do what they love most – cooking together.
What are the defining elements of this project that make it such a success?
The success of this gourmet kitchen is in the layout, which has been expertly designed and arranged with each step of the cooking process in mind as well as the clients’ own unique processes. Each of the zones and workstations have been thoroughly thought out in terms of workflows for preparation, cooking, cleaning, plating up and storage.The kitchen has also been appointed with the latest technology, including a full kit of Gaggenau appliances.The clients now have convenient access to a deep fryer, teppanyaki plate, combination steam oven, warming drawer, wine fridge and two full size ovens.
How do the chosen appliances enhance this kitchen’s appeal?
Using only the latest technology means the semi- commercial kitchen is ideal for these two culinary pros.The appliances have been expertly arranged to allow these foodies to cook together simultaneously.
Was any other structural work required with the room?
To make way for the extra space required for the scullery and study nook sought after by the clients, we appropriated an adjacent bedroom on the upper entry level by taking down the wall that once separated the original kitchen and bedroom.The floor was lowered to match the existing kitchen floor height on the lower level and the ceiling dropped to an appropriate height to suit the existing window in the adjacent dining room.
